While leopard print has been in and out throughout the years I’ve been interested in fashion, I started the see the rise of leopard print while I was abroad in Paris this past spring. A very specific memory comes to mind:
The air was chilly and my cheeks were tinted pink from the breeze. The clean and aesthetic city of Copenhagen was alive as people strolled down the cobblestone streets. People’s conversations floated to my ears as they rode past on their pastel bikes, or sipped their coffees from the little coffee shops they populated. Fashionable women were everywhere, with their leopard print pants, signature tote bags, and comfy sweaters. My goal of the trip: find leopard print pants!
When I came back to the United States a couple months later with a suitcase filled with leopard print items, I noticed that the trend had just become popular whereas it had been a hot topic in Europe for months prior.
For a while leopard print in the US was associated with the “mob wife aesthetic,” now we are seeing the trend in a different light. “It feels like we’re moving away from East Coast American styling and more towards Scandinavian styling. The pattern adds a fun flair to fall outfits yet still leans neutral and goes with everything”(Maberry).
From a PR perspective, this shift shows how trends can spread through cultural exchange, and how good timing is crucial for getting consumers’ attention. The slower adoption of leopard print in the US shines light on the value of watching global fashion trends and adjusting them for local markets. Brands that keep track of international trends and adapt their messaging and products can take advantage of growing interest.
